@thestifledartist: Thanks for reading, and for sharing your own story. "Feeling positive and thinking good can happen is like stepping off a cliff into the unknown"....Yes, especially when we're not used to practicing that way of thinking and being! But from where I now stand, I know it works to keep practicing, because we really do become what we are practicing. Keep creating and sharing and spreading your love!! Thanks again...

I like this post, and I can relate. I'm a musician/writer, but don't play out due to a sense of "what if." Recently, I have decided to spend more time working towards goals of sharing my music with others, aside from just working on the music itself often. Anything can happen -- but I know that music is one of my callings. Though I don't know where it will take me and I'm not doing it for monetary reward, I don't want to leave this world knowing I never tried at one of the things that fulfills me the most. I definitely don't want to be "that person." I do believe we create what we believe. The world is crazy like that. Feeling positive and thinking good can happen is like stepping off a cliff into the unknown. There could be a landing pad, there could not. But you never know if you never try and putting your gifts out there is not going to kill you. Being negative is just the logical way to stay stuck exactly where you are, because if seems safe to stick with the familiar. Ask me how I know!

This kind of stuff feels similar to what an acquaintance of mine, Paul Brunson, realized about himself after several frustrated educational ventures. He shifted into his own version of life coaching a website/life coaching/matchmaker service called onedegreefrom.me and from the external metrics I can observe (event size, twitter followers, facebook activity) he seems to be doing much better in a field that focuses on his people skills.

I hope that you don't give up on education as a result of this experience. Personally, my feeling is that you chose the willful upper class that is pretty much doomed to treat you as an inferior if they are paying you market value for your services. They may feel that they've "bought" you. When I used to tutor for this population, my frequent feeling was that the majority of these parents "treat you like the maid". Hopefully, that means they have deep regard for those in the service industries, but often it seems to me that a maid or au pair relationship defines a great deal of their attitudes toward service occupations.

Anyways, I'm a rambler and a gambler in this comment so I shall cease.
Blessings,
jrc

The part about "increasing self direction in the teenage years" gets my attention, because as I heard someone say on the radio this week: the teen years seem to start at about 8 now! I can vouch for the fact that my 10 year old is in full teen mode. Very frustrating. I want to encourage independence, but 10 is too young to have the knowledge and experience needed for that independence -- too young to be shutting out adult guidance...and yet, the shutting-out is happening.

I think it's time for me to get a hold of (and read) Amy's book. Thank you for your thoughtful post. Media will continue to dish out the "sensational" (as acleansurface refers to the word) as long as people stand in line hungry for it and willing to buy it.
Lisa, I love the pic--with all the highlighted pages of the book. :)

Thank you. Excellent synopis from you. It takes a community to support healthy growth - and you have reflected that well. You, as one, have brilliantly contributed to stakeholder's knowledge base.

I think this is such a great point, and one that is lost on too many people. It really saddens me that we are still such a stuff-obsessed culture when the joy of having less and living more simply brings instant and profound gratification and, and cheesy as it sounds, inner peace. Thanks for the post and for the videos. Excellent work!

Journalism has been SENSATIONAL (I am using the meaning of "intended to cause a stir", rather than the common usage of the word to mean "fabulous") for many generations. I do hope that someday we can find the right balance and make it both informative and entertaining, not one or the other. I still have not seen your original video on the book, but I look forward to it soon.

@Max, probably all of the above! I definitely bought one copy. And plenty others have too. It's just interesting to me that of all the reviews in so many places in the internet, so few (if any) even began to talk about the actual book. It's well-written and entertaining, even if you exclude the first chapter, which is where the WSJ excerpt largely comes from. My point is, this kind of marketing seems to assume that the consumer cannot handle complexity. Maybe that's true too.

Thanks for reading...
